Understanding Trauma & PTSD

Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event—or series of events—that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. When trauma symptoms persist and disrupt daily life, it may develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Signs of PTSD

  • Intrusive Thoughts – Flashbacks, nightmares, or unwanted memories

  • Avoidance – Staying away from people, places, or reminders of the trauma

  • Negative Changes in Mood & Thinking – Persistent fear, guilt, shame, or numbness

  • Hyperarousal – Feeling on edge, easily startled, irritable, or having trouble sleeping

  • Emotional & Physical Reactivity – Strong reactions to triggers related to the trauma
